Termination Letter Samples

Letter of Termination - Definition

A letter of termination, or termination letter, is normally used to terminate one of two situations: an employee's job, or a contractual arrangement or obligation.

Termination letters are almost always used in business situations and are therefore generally classified as business letters.

The most well known type of termination letter is the "employment termination letter" that is sent by a company or organization to an employee to advise that person that their employment with that organization has come to an end.

The other widely-used type of termination letter is one that is sent by a company or individual to a company or organization to advise them of the termination of some sort of contractual arrangement.

Note: Termination letters are sometimes incorrectly confused with "resignation letters" that are used by individuals to advise their employer that they will be leaving their job. To see an example of a "resignation letter" click here.
