If you've spent any time doing research into what college admission essays are all about, you are excused if you're just a little confused by some of the seemingly conflicting terminology you've see thrown about.
The terminology used to describe these documents can be very confusing at times. My research has revealed that there are a number of different terms that are widely used to signify the generic "college admission essay." These terms vary from country to country, and often from school to school, even within the same country.
Here is a list of the most common terms that are used to describe what is essentially the "college admission essay":
Generically speaking, these terms all refer to essentially the same document - a personalized essay on any one of many possible subjects, as specified by the institution to which you are applying.
Graduate admission essay
Personal statement essay
Statement of purpose
Whichever term they use, each college or university will specify exactly what they want your document to contain in terms of focus, word length, and specific content.
Make sure you stick with the terminology and definition used by the institution to which you are applying. Don't try to force your own term or definition on them. You'll just be wasting your time and making it more difficult for yourself.
